A physician-leader built for the future of health. Science, enterprise, communication, and human purpose.
Robin L. Smith, MD, MBA, has built a career across medicine, regenerative science, entrepreneurship, corporate leadership, writing, speaking, governance, and public service.
Her work is defined by a willingness to operate where disciplines meet – translating emerging science, building organizations, leading through change, and connecting innovation to better human outcomes. Her existing body of work reflects not a single role, but a sustained pattern of leadership across healthcare, biotechnology, public education, and mission-driven service.
Section 1 – Medicine & Education
Grounded in medicine. Expanded through leadership.
Dr. Smith’s foundation begins in medicine. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Yale University and her M.D. from the Yale School of Medicine, then added an M.B.A. from the Wharton School and completed the Stanford University Directors Program.
Her path reflects an unusual breadth: clinical training, business strategy, governance, science, and institutional leadership. She has also served as a clinical associate professor in the Department of Medicine at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and received an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Thomas Jefferson Medical College.
That combination helps explain her perspective today. She approaches the future of health not only as a physician, but as someone who understands how science moves through companies, institutions, boards, public conversation, and real-world adoption.
Section 2 – Regenerative Medicine & Enterprise
A career shaped at the leading edge of regenerative medicine.
From 2006 through 2015, Dr. Smith served as chairman and chief executive officer of NeoStem, where she helped pioneer a model combining proprietary cell therapy development with contract development and manufacturing capabilities.
That work placed her directly inside the early commercial evolution of regenerative medicine – where scientific promise had to be translated into viable organizations, manufacturing systems, investor confidence, clinical progress, and long-term strategy.
During her tenure, NeoStem received national and industry recognition, including placement on Deloitte’s Technology Fast 500 and Frost & Sullivan’s North American Cell Therapeutics Technology Innovation Leadership Award.
Section 3 – Author & Public Educator
Making frontier medicine understandable.
Dr. Smith has long worked to make complex medical innovation understandable to people outside the laboratory and boardroom. She co-authored Cells Are the New Cure and The Healing Cell, books focused on the emerging potential of cellular and regenerative medicine.
Her writing reflects a recurring theme in her career: translating scientific possibility into language that helps patients, families, leaders, and the public understand why new discoveries matter.
That public-education role continues naturally into interviews, speaking, media, and thought leadership. The objective is not hype. It is to give serious science context, meaning, and a human frame.
Section 4 – Science, Faith & Global Dialogue
Building bridges across science, values, and human dignity.
One of the most distinctive threads in Dr. Smith’s work has been her ability to bring scientific leaders, institutions, philanthropists, public figures, and faith communities into the same conversation.
Her long engagement with Vatican initiatives and international health forums reflects a belief that the future of medicine is not only a scientific question. It is also a human question – involving ethics, dignity, access, meaning, trust, and the kind of future society wants to build.
In 2016, Pope Francis conferred on Dr. Smith the distinction of Dame Commander with Star of the Pontifical Equestrian Order of Saint Sylvester Pope and Martyr, recognizing a broader history of service and bridge-building.
Section 5 – Leadership, Governance & Service
Leadership across institutions, boards, and public health.
Dr. Smith’s leadership has extended across public and private companies, healthcare systems, biotechnology, technology, AI, nonprofit organizations, and advisory bodies. Her board experience spans audit, governance, compensation, nominating, and science and technology responsibilities.
She has served in leadership roles connected with organizations including Sanford Health, NYU Langone Medical Center, NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases, the Alliance for Regenerative Medicine Foundation, and health-focused advisory initiatives.
She is also the founder and president of the Cura Foundation, established in 2007 to advance human health and well-being through collaboration, education, innovation, prevention, and service.
Section 6 – Recognition & Continuing Work
A body of work recognized across science, business, and service.
Dr. Smith’s work has been recognized through awards spanning regenerative medicine, entrepreneurship, humanitarian leadership, corporate performance, and public service.
Recent and notable honors include the South Florida Business & Wealth Prestigious Women’s Award, the Regenerative Medicine Foundation’s Stem Cell and Regenerative Medicine Action Award for International Diplomacy, the HEALinc Future Health Humanitarian Award, Business Intelligence Group’s Woman of the Year, and a Gold Stevie Award for Woman of the Year – Government or Non-Profit.
The common thread across these accomplishments is not a single title. It is the continued effort to move important ideas forward – across medicine, enterprise, public understanding, and service.
